POSITION SUMMARY:

The Conveyor Manager is responsible for the effective operation of the conveyor system which drives the Ocean State Job Lot distribution operation. This role partners with the Distribution Center (DC) operations team to maximize the productivity and throughput of conveyable goods. The manager leads the sort deck operations team and the conveyor mechanic team to assure the safe, productive functioning of the conveyor with optimized uptime and throughput. Additionally, the Conveyor Manager leads and drives the utilization of the warehouse control system (WCS) that directs the conveyor activities. This individual effectively identifies and resolves issues, monitors productivity, and defines data reports that guide management plans and decisions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead team of maintenance mechanics and sort deck operators to safe, cost effective, and productive operation of the conveyor system. Maintain a working knowledge of all aspects of the conveyor system.
  • Define sort deck operations processes and procedures to effectively run the conveyor in support of the waving and picking schedule in place each day and each shift.
  • Establish, implement, and manage a preventative maintenance (PM) program that meets or exceeds manufacturer recommendations and that maximizes conveyor operation time and cost-effectiveness.
  • Partner with the DC operations team to decide PM schedules and necessary break/fix work to give the flexibility to continue operations to the maximum extent possible.
  • Track and report all conveyor maintenance activities and problem resolution. Ensure processes are in place to drive continuous improvement.
  • Determine and maintain appropriate spare parts inventories. Identify and engage external sources for materials and equipment not carried on site.
  • Manage outside contractors. Be available on call for emergencies with the warehouse.
  • Build, train, oversee, and develop a high performing work team. Encourage excellent performance and behavior aligned with company values. Conduct performance management reviews of maintenance mechanics and sort deck operators to support the professional development of DC associates.
  • Ensure that teams have the appropriate tools and systems to effectively execute their jobs including equipment, system access, and training.
  • Motivate and mentor team members to work collaboratively and effectively to achieve goals and make a consistent effort to go above and beyond.
  • Mitigate conflict and communication problems among team members.
  • Work with DC operations leadership to understand, implement, and audit safety programs. Ensure that all safety programs and procedures are followed.
  • Facilitate technical and safety training for DC associates.
  • Work with DC leadership to develop, set, and track budgets and capital spending plans.
  • Develop tools and reports in the WHizard system (WCS that directs the conveyor) that provide leadership with visibility around performance and effective problem resolution.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of industry trends and direction. Bring innovative ideas and solutions to the operation to help drive improvements. Develop and design innovative solutions to difficult problems.
  • Manage multiple internal and external projects and daily activities. Manage and meet deadlines. Develop and track plans on how to accomplish operational goals.

REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • 10 years experience in conveyor maintenance (5 or more years managing a conveyor maintenance function).
  • Bachelor's degree in industrial engineering, business administration, computer science, information systems, or a related field preferred.
  • Highly proficient in Google platform (i.e. sites, slides, drive, docs, sheets) and analytic tools.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Work primarily in a distribution center environment. Physically active position including bending, squatting, lifting, climbing in support of maintenance activities. A portion of time will be sedentary, with near vision use for reading and computer use.
