LOCATION: Capital Area Food Bank - DC

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION It's a dynamic time at the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) as we embark on our next strategic plan and respond to the COVID-19 crisis. The pandemic and the resulting economic slowdown are having a significant impact on our community and CAFB is actively responding and engaged in the recovery and equitable rebuilding of our region. Additionally, our strategic plan has a dual focus on addressing hunger today and seeking innovative approaches that bundle food with other related services as we aim to have a lasting impact on longer term food security. The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest organization in the Washington, DC metro area working to solve hunger and its companion problems: chronic under-nutrition, heart disease, and obesity. By partnering with 450 community organizations in DC, MD and VA as well as delivering food directly into hard to reach areas, the CAFB is helping approximately 400,000 food insecure people each year get access to good, healthy food, as a means of enabling brighter futures

DESCRIPTION

The Compliance Officer ensures compliance with the Capital Area Food Bank's regulations, policies and procedures, and monitors compliance as required by 501(c) (3) and applicable government standards. This position is responsible for all programmatic and operational enforcement, analysis and standards. The employee develops his or her own work methods and procedures subject to review by the CFO.

The Compliance Officer clarifies requirements for each program on an annual basis and identifies problems, develops corrective actions plans and monitors the progress and adherences to those plans. Covered areas include procurement, standardization of process in food flow (receipts and distributions), inventory processes and adherence to government regulations for government programs. The employee needs to have a problem identification and problem resolution mindset. The employee interacts in a consistently collaborative and helpful manner in support of employees but also needs to ensure accountability to the organization's procedures and policies. S/he should be a person who knows how to influence and help support change in other colleague's behaviors.

Essential Functions:
  • Maps processes as they exist today and suggests improvements in line with best practices, existing corrective actions plans, and government regulations where applicable.
  • Develops detailed implementation plans to affect necessary change to ensure compliance.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues across the organization to ensure successful procedural implementations and end outcomes.
  • Develops tracking tools to ensure progress towards goals
  • Conducts internal audits, investigations, prepares reports and maintains records.
  • Makes programmatic feasibility audits and analyzes potential cost savings, and waste reduction measures.
  • Prepares examination questions for executive leadership in preparation of compliance audits.
  • Makes recommendations and provides periodic reports to the Executive Team.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • College degree.
  • 5 to 10 years of experience in a for profit, government or not for profit organization; preferably in a compliance role

Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Ability to enforce regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially.
  • Prior experience in an operations consulting/process improvement role
  • Some understanding of food flow environments

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Sitting for 80% of the workday. Occasionally lifts office supplies up to 20 lbs. Some situations may require support at our Lorton, VA location.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Normal business office, with frequent tight deadlines.
